Disaster Preparedness

Disaster is an inevitable part of life. It’s unfortunate, but it’s true. Mother Nature isn’t always hospitable, so we need to be prepared when disaster strikes Generally, disaster preparedness is an extension of preparing for another day to day problems, so it’s just a matter of forward thinking. Here are a few ways to be better prepared for a disaster.

First and foremost, you’re going to need food and water, much like you would on any other day. However, you won’t have much of an opportunity, if any, to resupply during a catastrophe, so you need to stock up Ideally, you want to have several gallons of clean water in storage at all times, and about a week’s worth of food. However, since many disaster leave you without electricity, you’re going to need to keep a healthy supply of non-perishables on hand, as well. Honey, for example, has no  observable expiration date, making it a great survival food. Pasta, rice, beans, and other dehydrated foods are great for this purpose, as well.

You’re also going to need other, more  general supplies to weather the storm, so to speak. A prominent example of this is first aid supplies. You’re going to have to fend yourself for awhile, and ideally nobody gets injured, but if they do, medical professionals may very well be inaccessible, so making sure you can patch up minor wounds is vital. Another important thing to take care of is light sources. As previously mentioned, electricity is a common sacrifice we have to make during a disaster, so be sure to have plenty of non electric lighting, such as candles and oil lamps, so that you’re not literally left in the dark when tragedy strikes. Sam’s’ Club will have just about everything you’ll need in case of emergency, so make sure you’re prepared.
